Kevin McCarthy next speaker of the House?
Uphill battle for Speaker of the House in the next congress.
Kevin McCarthy has been a very controversial GOP leader since he was first appointed any committee. I am not talking about just questioning legitimacy of the election results and how to balloting was done in several states during the pandemic. Refusing to certify results after back room talks with other politicians about how you know Biden won even without those states on the other hand. Thats low. However, his controversies go back further than that.
In 2012 the fresh house majority whip reported $99,000 in pastries, bottled water and other food items. I will be honest I could not find, nor did I look too much further into this other than Wikipedia. Even if that number is not exactly correct it’s still an insane number. Congress only averages 146.7 working days per year.1
You also cannot forget the 2015 gaffe where McCarthy admitted in an interview with Sean Hannity that the special investigation into Clinton’s role in the Benghazi incident was a political attempt to defeat Clinton in the election. I could not locate a specific link to that interview, but it was chronicled in the WaPo article titled “Kevin McCarthy’s Truthful Gaffe on Benghazi.”2 I hate it when the left tries this tactic and I hate it just as much when the right does it. It just shows that neither side has a real agenda for America.
While we are still in 2015 let’s not forget his previous attempt to become Speaker of the House. He dropped out because he knew that he did not have the 218 votes needed to become Speaker. While he did state that Republicans need a uniting Speaker and that he was not the guy, many speculate it was also because of his comments on the Benghazi Investigation. Maybe he spoke the truth in 2015 or maybe it was pressure from his dumb gaffe. Either way you have some low-lifes in the GOP who will put pressure on him to agree with their agenda if he wants 218 votes. If he caved to pressure in 2015 instead of owning his mistakes, then I have no faith he will fold like bad poker player when they ask him for the most extreme far right agenda instead of keeping America center focused.
So, the obvious question is will Kevin McCarthy be the next speaker of the house? If not, then who would it be? While I have no trust in the Democratic party whatsoever, I also have no faith in most of the GOP leadership either. There are also some very distasteful individuals within the party that make me want to say well it could be worse. This is what it is like to watch the party politics in America. You can either cry because it’s such a tragic tale or laugh at it because of the three-ring circus it truly is.
